Hobson and Surrounding Areas (Buffalo, Benchland, Kolin, Moccasin, Straw and Utica)

The town of Hobson began as Philbrook five miles west of the present site in 1902.  When the Billings and Northern railroad was built through the Judith Basin in 1907, the company found the present site along the Judith River to be a convenient location for a town. Simeon S. Hobson, a public-spirited citizen, purchased the land for the town site and donated it to the community.  In appreciation, the local citizens renamed the town in his honor and it was officially declared so on November 19, 1908.

The Judith River, a crystal clear trout stream and tributary of the Missouri River, originates in the Little Belt Mountains and was named by William Clark in honor of his future wife, Julia Judith Hancock in May of 1805 during his famous expedition with Meriwether Lewis.

The river supplied water for the large herds of cattle that were trailed in from Texas in the 1880’s and irrigation water for farmers. Soon the region filled with farmers cultivating winter wheat and barley and ranchers raising registered Herefords and Angus beef.

Hobson was publicized as the “Gateway to the Judith Basin” known as one of the most fertile and desirable areas in Montana. With the completion of the Ackley Lake project in 1938, additional water for irrigation has helped to produce large amounts of hay and alfalfa.

While  Hobson is an historic town, rich in culture and tradition, it has stepped up to meet the future.  Historic main street buildings house businesses bustling with cutting edge technology. DSL internet access is available to everyone within the town of Hobson, as well as within a 3-mile radius of the town.

Snuggled in the foothills of the Little Belt Mountains and in the shadows of the Snowy Mountains, surrounded by golden fields of waving wheat and registered Angus cattle we think we truly have the “last best place” in the heart of Big Sky Country.  We do have excellent schools and churches, a modern sewer system, city well, paved streets and sidewalks, local parks complete with heated swimming pool, great businesses, very little crime, an unbelievable variety of recreational opportunities and 252 outrageously  friendly people.
